The name 'BDK' stands for British Domestic Boiler. These valves derive their name from their distinctive shape and the fact that they use water as the fuel. The valve is a cylinder-shaped spring that when force is applied to the top, it forces the water through the piston and hence to the valve seat. The top handle is placed on the top of the cylinder so that it is raised during the operation and depressed during the rest of the time.

In other words, the valve does not permit the water flowing in reverse. Another feature is the hydroscopic valve that reduces leakage of steam and gas.
